After Celtic eventually disposed of a plucky and a bit unfortunate St Mirren side in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup, manager Brendan Rodgers claimed the struggling championship side were the best team we’ve faced this season at Celtic Park.
To back up his claim, the Buddies were centimetres away from taking a two goal lead when Moussa Dembele swiped at a free-kick only to deflect the ball off the underside of OUR crossbar!
Luckily the ball then bounced too high for the Saints goalscorer Davis to double his tally. The Bhoys pounced on their good fortune and duly went down the park to score two goals in a minute, courtesy of Mikel Lustig and Scott Sinclair.
Sure the Hoops then finished the job by adding anther two to make the final scoreline 4-1 but that doesn’t tell the full story.
No other team domestically have made life so difficult for Celtic at home. No other team came so close to taking a two goal lead, and no other team created so many chances and half-chances than St Mirren. And more importantly, at no time did the Paisley side try and kick the Bhoys off the park.
While Brendan’s assessment that the Saints were the best team we’ve faced, domestically, at Celtic Park might not suit pundits Steven (EBT) Thompson, Neil (the rat) McCann or Scott (Skippy) McDonald, I’d say the gaffer knows best.
Of the three I’d say only Skippy has a right to question Rodgers’ opinion, simply because he still plays, more of a personal pride issue than a factual one though.
The other two just don’t like hearing the truth..
