Tommy Gemmell, the Lisbon Lions ‘Mr Hot Shot’ sadly passed away today at the age of 73 after a long illness. Tommy blasted two out of the three goals Celtic scored in our two European Cup Final appearances of 1967 and 1970.
One of the original attacking full backs, Tommy scored an incredible 64 times in 418 appearances for Celtic in his ten years at Celtic Park, often from the penalty spot, with a shot that would make many a goal net bulge!
I’d tweeted earlier this week when the sad news of big Billy’s illness became public, that we should cherish the Lions. None of us are getting any younger and I felt that sometimes we think these incredible men will go on forever. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
Tommy’s passing takes the number of Lisbon Lions who have died to four, with his former teammates Bobby Murdoch, Ronnie Simpson and Jimmy Johnstone and of course his gaffer big Jock all no longer with us.
It’s a sad day in many respects but a happy one in others. Tommy Gemmell gave us, the Celtic support, so many great times, and like those who have pulled on the Hoops before and after him, he will never be forgotten.
Rest In Peace Tommy Gemmell.
