The Wakes…Irish Folk Band…New Album Review !!!!!!!

Scotland’s Greatest Irish Folk Band..The Wakes have just released their long awaited album for public sale following a launch night gig on Sunday 27th September in Maggie Mays on Glasgow’s Trongate.

The album which I have now listened to continually whilst driving( just about 400 miles)over the last few days is a quite brilliant collection of 11 songs with 8 of them being The Wakes own original material with indeed one of those being their previously released single “The Uncrowned King Of Football” which is the bands very own tribute to Celtic’s Greatest Ever Player Jimmy Johnstone.

The album in fact encapsulates everything that makes The Wakes the top Irish Folk Band they are, with the songs telling stories of how the Irish people unselfishly took part in various “Rebellions” not only in their homeland but also all around the world. It does this with The Wakes very own brand of “Sadness, Humour, Socialism & Anarchy” and is a must listen to for all “Real Rebels” in life not just those of  the “oh-ah brigade”

Lead singer & guitarist Paul’s superb vocal talents(including one song sung in Italian) are backed by the fantastic musical talents of the rest of the band members, Chris, Christopher, Eamon & James, whose collective sound makes The Wakes as I have stated right at the start of this article  ”Scotland’s Greatest Irish Folk Band”, bar none !!!

The “No Irish Need Apply” album is now available from the band at www.thewakes-band.com or indeed if you have any problems contacting the band, then you can get in touch with me here or at phil57@celticfanzone.net.

Jimmy Johnstone Memorial Statue Fundraiser…..

Graeme Souness and Good Guy…not words you would usually expect in the same sentence in a Celtic website but words we do have to use following his actions last week.

The ex Liverpool, Rangers and Scotland Player had agreed to attend a “Football In Question Night” organised and compered by CelticFanzone.net’s very own Phil Agnew in the Tannochside Olde Club, Viewpark to help raise some funds for the statue being erected in Jinky’s honour in his native Viewpark on the site of his former school St Columba’s RCP and only 100 yards from his childhood home.

After agreeing to attend the function on Thursday 6th August alongside some other football legends and personalities, including Lisbon Lion Bertie Auld, Top Celtic Comedian Pat Rolink and journalist Hugh Keevins, he found that he had got his dates mixed up and that he would still be on a family holiday in Florida until Saturday 8th.

Having given his promise to the committee he would attend the event  he then decided to fly home early without the rest of his family so that he could in his own words “help to honour a world class football legend who he was also lucky to be able to call a friend”.

The night was a great success and one at which Souness advised all in the hall “he had trained with Celtic as a teenager and would have signed without any hesitation had he been asked to”.

The fundraising for the Jimmy Johnstone Memorial Statue is going well and the fabulous sculpture should be unveiled on Jinky’s Anniversary next March.

Our very own Phil Agnew is on the fund committee and actually “officially represents” all the Celtic Supporter’s Group Associations on that committee.

Anyone who would like to arrange their own fundraising night can contact Phil directly here or by Email at  phil57@celticfanzone.net .

Alternatively if you wish to make a donation to…. The Jimmy Johnstone Memorial Fund… you can do so directly at…The Clydesdale Bank Almada Street Hamilton…Sort Code…82-70-03. A/c No…20178953. IBAN No….GB95Clyd827003 20178953.

Posted by: Fanzone | Comments (7)

New Celtic Fanzone Round The Corner

Now in our fifth year the Celtic Fanzone is going through a major overhaul and to make the site more user friendly we would like your opinion.

John Fallon

John Fallon

Already we’ve looked at a few ideas of our own, and one of them is to do interviews with former Celts, celebrity Celts and ‘Celtic’ men and women of all walks in life.

But we need your help.

Who would YOU like to ask a question?

Lisbon Lion John Fallon? Celtic legend Paul McStay? Ex Celtic captain Tom Boyd?

These are just a few suggestions, YOU tell us and we’ll try do the rest.

C’mon then, get posting!
